Train Your Dog

If you want to train your dog in basic obedience or if you are looking to train a working service dog, you’ve come to the right place!  TOP DOG has been helping people with disabilities train their own dogs for over 20 years and have certified more than 100 dog-owner-teams!

If you want to train a dog but don’t have one, TOP DOG has also helped many of its clients acquire a suitable dog or particular breed.  We have rescued dogs from local animal shelters for this purpose and have even matched several “career change dogs” that started out at Guide Dogs for the Blind, but didn’t complete that program.  We take great care in matching the personality of each person with their dog.

Although there is no such thing as an “ideal service dog breed,” the best candidates must exhibit “confident reserve” and not be the least bit aggressive toward other dogs, animals, or people.  They must be spayed or neutered, and ideally no less than six months nor more than four years of age, and weigh at least 40 pounds.

The Application Process

Tucson residents may apply for training and request an application by calling the TOP DOG office or may download the application online. Once the application is returned to us, TOP DOG will conduct two interviews – one in the applicant’s home and another in public to determine the suitability of the applicant and their dog for the program.

Applicants must also submit a medical form that is completed and signed by their physician plus a veterinary form that is completed and signed by their dog’s veterinarian. This will enable TOP DOG to assess both the applicant and the dog’s physical well-being and ability to withstand the rigors of service dog work.
